Fly Away, My Sleep
Fly Away, My Sleep
Fly away, my sleep, into the night,
Like a migrant bird in its restless flight.
You leave me alone till the morning light,
As if you were frightened, and taking flight.
And I cannot hold you, try as I may,
You vanished so suddenly, gone away.
The only one who can help me today,
Is waiting for you to come back and stay.
Oh tell me, what is it that drives you afar,
You timid, nocturnal, elusive star?
Where do you go when the night is so dark?
And who is the one that you fly toward?
I will sing you a song of this sleepless despair,
How lonely it is, and how hard to bear.
And you’ll tell me a tale of the cool evening air,
And the path that you take, and the things that are there.
And the dreams that all fled, they gather and stream,
Forming a flock, like a birds in a dream.
What do they care for our fears and our pain,
Our sickness and sorrow, again and again?
They are fine on their own, in the sky, wild and free,
Our strange, fleeting dreams, for the whole world to see.
A flock that has flown from you and from me,
A flock that has flown from humanity.
