Confession

Why do you rush to my rescue so fast,
As if I'm a daughter you've lost in the past?
As if you have known all my faults and my shame—
You long from the ruins to raise me again.

I've barely just managed these verses to write,
But again you extend me your helping light.
I know that you lead me along on this track—
And if I should stumble, you'll help me come back.

What did I do to deserve such a grace?
Will they know whom I follow, the name, the face?
I'll go where you go—over mountains and plains,
Though my shoes may wear out and turn into chains.

Let the pain be unbearable, tearing my chest,
I will follow you still—I can't settle for less.
I don't know the year, I don't know the date,
When, having atoned, I will stand at your gate.

What did I do to deserve such a grace?
Will they know whom I follow, the name, the face?
I'll go where you go—over mountains and plains,
Though my shoes may wear out and turn into chains.

And the name that my mother once gave me that day —
Svetlana, the light — will not fade away.
Like a berry on Saari, so small yet so bright,
It will shine through the darkness and guide me to light.
